Witchspire at a Glance

Witchspire witch exploring a magical biome

Witchspire is a co-op open-world survival-crafting RPG from developer and publisher Envar Games. It entered Steam Early Access on June 10, 2026, and casts you as a novice witch (or wizard) shipwrecked in a hand-crafted magical land where an ancient darkness is stirring. You survive, gather, craft, befriend creatures, and ultimately work to reignite the sleeping Witchspires.

This guide pulls together the community-reported information available during Early Access, so treat every number and location here as patch-dependent. The current build is roughly patch 0.1.4, and much of the data comes from dedicated fan hubs rather than finalized in-game documentation. If a spawn point or recipe has shifted since you last played, you are not imagining it — things still change between updates.

The Four Pillars of Play

Envar Games frames Witchspire around four gameplay pillars, and understanding them makes the early game far less confusing.

  • Survival Made Magical — You use magic to gather resources and conjure a sanctum. Survival is real, but your toolset is spells, not just axes.
  • Make New Friends — You meet, battle, and befriend creatures as familiars that either fight beside you or keep your sanctum running.
  • A Mysterious World — The dormant Witchspires have awoken, and something darker moves beneath the surface. This drives the main quest and the endgame mystery.
  • Coven-Based Progression — A branching tech tree, character growth, outfit collection, and coven-specific bonuses let you shape a distinct build.

If you internalize just one thing from this page, make it this: Witchspire rewards preparation. A little time spent on your base and familiars early saves a lot of deaths later.

Beginning Your Journey in Thornveil

You wash up in Thornveil, the starting area, with effectively nothing. The opening hours are about establishing a foothold rather than chasing power.

Your First Priorities

Veteran guides converge on the same short checklist for night one:

  1. Gather everything you see. Branches, small trees, ore nodes, herbs — the early game economy is generous and you will need almost all of it.
  2. Build your Hearth. The Hearth is the heart of your base. It prevents enemy spawns in its radius, doubles as a respawn point and fast-travel anchor, and upgrades through nine levels. Everything else you build radiates out from it.
  3. Craft a Witch’s Lantern before the first night. Darkness is dangerous, and the lantern keeps your early excursions survivable.
  4. Rush the Hearth Core recipe. Upgrading the Hearth to Level 2 via the Hearth Core is repeatedly called the single most important early recipe — it unlocks the rest of the progression chain.
  5. Push the Luminary skill tree until you unlock the broom, which dramatically changes how fast you can traverse the world.

Choosing a Starter Familiar

Your starter familiar shapes your first dozen hours, so pick with intent.

  • Quol (Ethereal) is widely regarded as the safest, most beginner-friendly pick, especially for solo players. A notable Quol-species catch, Vex, lives in a cave behind a waterfall during an early quest.
  • Locto (Lux) is the support-oriented choice, and most guides recommend it if you are playing in co-op.
  • Fien (Nox) suits aggressive ranged combat and enemy control — a good fit for players who want to fight at a distance.
  • Bril (Crystal) is a defensive starter, but it has a quirk: it can only be summoned during the day using a sundial, so it is not available at night.

If you are brand new and unsure, take Quol. You can always expand your roster later.

Choosing a Coven at Thornveil Academy

One of Witchspire’s defining choices is your Coven, selected through Thornveil Academy. Covens are effectively your class, each granting specific bonuses that steer your build. Thornveil Academy is also where Professor Celesti works — she has specific dialogue about Celestial Familiars, so it is worth visiting and chatting when you can.

One of the six Coven options is The Nightscribes, a mysterious and ambitious Coven attuned to the stars and the darkness of night. If a star-and-shadow theme appeals to you, that is your sign. Because Coven bonuses are build-defining and Early Access balance is still moving, pick the theme that fits how you actually want to play rather than chasing a tier list.

Understanding Familiars

Familiars are the heart of Witchspire’s progression. They come in elemental families — Ethereal, Nox, Lux, Crystal, Astral, and Nature are all referenced by community data — and they serve two main roles: combat companions or base workers.

Rarity and Shifty Variants

Familiars are graded by stars, and bonding higher-rarity creatures unlocks dedicated achievements:

  • 1 star — a Rare Familiar.
  • 2 stars — an Epic Familiar.
  • 3 stars — a Legendary Familiar.

There is also a rarer category called Shifty familiars. These are visually distinct in color from their normal counterparts. The most commonly reported example is a purple Rockling (regular Rocklings are green). If you spot a familiar that looks the wrong color, catch it — that is a Shifty.

A Celestial familiar type also exists. These glow faintly and are tied to a specific achievement, so keep an eye out for creatures that shimmer slightly.

Catching and Bonding with Incense

Incense is your main catching tool and the primary way to boost bonding success with wild familiars. Bonding without incense is possible but unreliable, which is a big deal for one-off encounters.

The incense tiers scale with your crafting progress:

  • Simple Spirit Incense — crafted with Spirit Dust.
  • Incense of Calling — requires a Spirit Shard.
  • Shimmering Incense — crafted from Greater Spirit Dust and Shimmer Dust.

Because some familiars are found in locations you will not revisit, it pays to carry incense before you leave the early zones — otherwise a one-time creature like Peb (likely an early quest mob and an area you may never return to) can slip through your fingers permanently.

Noteworthy Familiar Spawns

Several familiars have time-of-day or location quirks that trip people up:

  • Fien, Firra, and Verlai appear near Mirella’s cabin at the start of night and linger until shortly after dawn. Firra also shows up in a hidden corner near the cabin or on the nearby hill with wand towers.
  • Verlai is a rogue-like night-only familiar that is later replaced by Cindle, which appears after Verlai’s part of the rotation.
  • Carsce is a solitary, low-level variant of the Specra familiar.
  • Traxio, a dragon-like familiar, spawns at level 28/30 near one of Mirella’s stalls and at a more isolated spot.
  • Gwaraofeerinax has two reported spawn locations: a level 20/22 spot in the open at elevation, and a level 30/32 spawn inside a cave.
  • Peb is likely an early quest mob you should not skip.
  • Etherit has a normal day-and-night respawn cycle, making it one of the easier achievement catches.
  • Treetop can gather Wood or Beeswax when assigned to the Forester’s Hut.

Many of these creatures are tied to bonding achievements, so working through the familiar checklist is a natural way to both grow your roster and clean up your achievement list.

Bosses and Where to Find Them

Boss fights gate materials and recipes, and each one expects a fairly specific counter-pick from your familiar roster.

  • Aloonian Golem — a rock-and-Nature boss in the Meadows / Vyrs area and the most accessible starting boss. Bring a Wildroot (Nature) or Starsmith (Crystal) familiar.
  • Shudder Matriarch — a Nox-aligned boss in the Shuddersands Desert that uses corruption attacks and summons minions. Cloudpiercer (Ethereal) and Tomekeeper (Lux) are the recommended counters.
  • Sand Wraith — an Ethereal-aligned boss that haunts the Shuddersands and specializes in hit-and-run attacks. Cloudpiercer and Foreteller (Astral) are recommended.
  • R’hyrrgar — found near the Froblin Camp, and it drops Beeswax.
  • Moonlit Guardian — an unverified Early Access boss associated with the Moonlit Grove. Its existence and details are community-reported and unconfirmed.

The pattern is worth memorizing: match your familiar’s element against the boss’s alignment, and bring a support familiar if you are playing co-op.

Resources, Crafting, and Stations

Witchspire’s crafting economy runs on a sprawling list of materials, and knowing what feeds what saves a lot of backtracking.

Key Materials

  • Woods — Spirit Wood (core early wood), Wood (branches and small trees), Premium Wood (larger trees), and Timber (needed for the first Forge recipe).
  • Ores and ingots — Spirit Ore, Iron Ore, Copper Ingot, Iron Ingot, Gold Ingot (mined from gold deposits late in Early Access), and Silver Ingot (location-specific).
  • Dusts and essences — Spirit Dust (base tier for Hearth upgrades and incense), Greater Spirit Dust, Brilliant Spirit Dust, Shimmer Dust, and Spirit Essence (used to craft the Hearth Core).
  • Special drops — Beeswax (dropped by Froblins and R’hyrrgar), Horn and Rich Spirit Pollen (from the large horned ram), Carapace, and Froblin Goo.
  • Gemstone — sells for 25 Gold each and is the game’s best Gold-per-hour item.
  • Others — Crystal (needed for the Hearth Core upgrade), Planks (Hearth Level 1→2 upgrade), Moonleaf and Spring Water (Health Elixir), and Charcoal (made by burning wood or chopping flaming trees).

Crafting Stations

Stations unlock progressively, so build in this general order:

  • Workbench — available at the start. Handles tools, the familiar whistle, bait, and the lantern.
  • Alchemy Table — available at the start. Handles potions, elixirs, Hearth upgrades, and incense.
  • Forge — unlocked through Meadows exploration. Metal tools and the tier 2 pickaxe.
  • Spell Weaving Loom — unlocked in Mid Meadows. Scrolls, robes, and tome weapons, including the Staff of Echoes (crafted with a Spirit Shard).
  • Alchemy Circle — unlocked from the central skill tree. Crafts ritual candles, including the Ritual Candle used for the Hearth Level 7 upgrade.
  • Furnace — smelts ore into ingots using charcoal.
  • Windmill — unlocked at Hearth Level 7, and it leads into the Level 8 upgrade.
  • Forester’s Hut — unlocked at Hearth Level 8; passively produces Beeswax or Wood with an assigned Treetop.
  • Mining Station — passively produces Gemstones when a familiar is assigned.

Exploring the Biomes and Locations

Witchspire’s map rewards wandering, but a few spots matter more than the rest.

  • Thornveil — the starting area. This is where you wash up.
  • Meadows / Vyrs — home to the Aloonian Golem and early resource nodes, including Iron Ore.
  • Timberline Basin — explored early in the Main Quest before the Froblin Camp.
  • Mira Isles — an island group containing Eastell and the Froblin Camp, where Froblins farm for Beeswax drops. There is also a flight pillar here near a silver ore route.
  • Vyr’s Landing — beyond this point, Froblins reportedly also drop Beeswax.
  • Ink Crater (Inky Vent) — a crater with flaming trees that yields Charcoal, Wood, and Copper Ore.
  • Shuddersands Desert — home to the Shudder Matriarch and Sand Wraith.
  • Moonlit Grove — associated with the unverified Moonlit Guardian boss and the source of the Grand Coven Robes recipe (high magic-resistance robes).

Several systems tie the exploration loop together: the Witch’s Lantern keeps your early travels survivable, the Mining Station hums away at your Hearth, and the Scroll of Regrowth spawns Spirit Trees wherever you use it. And if you invest Luminary Points into Vigor (double jump) and Luck (+1 luck per point), traversal and drops both improve noticeably.

Making Gold: Gemstone Mining

The community’s most consistent money-making advice is refreshingly simple: mine Gemstones and sell them at Mirella’s Shop, where they fetch full price at 25 Gold each. Gemstones are considered the best Gold-per-hour item in the game.

To scale this up, assign a familiar to a Mining Station for passive Gemstone production and pair it with an efficient silver ore route near the Mira Isles flight pillar. Mirella also runs stalls and owns a cabin — several familiar spawns cluster around her property, so swinging by her shop doubles as a familiar-hunting trip.

Early Access Status and What to Expect

Witchspire’s Early Access status colors everything above. Fan sites openly label their data as community-reported and patch-dependent, and the current build sits around patch 0.1.4.

The biggest caveat is endgame content. The Spire’s 4-keys system — the intended late-game progression — is incomplete and subject to change, so do not expect a finished endgame loop yet. Recipes are sometimes disputed between sources (the Witch’s Pickaxe recipe is one example, with conflicting lists of Carapace and Froblin Goo), and spawn timings can shift between patches. The Bril sundial timing, for instance, reportedly changed in the 0.1.4 update, with some players needing to press the button when the shadow hits roughly 120 degrees before the pointer rather than exactly on it.

Treat the game as a moving target. If a piece of advice here does not match what you see in-game, check the current patch notes — the community hubs update constantly.

Tips for New Witches

  • Pick Quol solo, Locto co-op. It is the safest default during your learning curve.
  • Hearth first, always. Fast travel and no-spawn zones make everything else easier.
  • Carry incense early. Some familiars, like Peb and Vex, live in zones you may never revisit.
  • Watch for off-color creatures. A purple Rockling means you have found a Shifty familiar.
  • Hunt familiars at night near Mirella’s cabin. Fien, Firra, and Verlai all spawn there after dark.
  • Match elements to bosses. Wildroot or Starsmith for the Aloonian Golem; Cloudpiercer and Tomekeeper for the Shudder Matriarch; Cloudpiercer and Foreteller for the Sand Wraith.
  • Fund everything with Gemstones. Mine them, sell them at Mirella’s, and let a Mining Station work in the background.

Witchspire is at its best when you treat it as a cozy-but-dangerous sandbox that rewards patience. Build the base, grow the familiar roster, and let the Witchspires guide you outward when you are ready.
