    Enter astral projection build mode
Open building and your viewpoint detaches from the ground. You float freely around your structure in full 360°, gravity-untethered, so you can place pieces above, below, or behind without any scaffolding. There is no fall damage while you are a projected spirit.

Place pieces freely from any angle
Most common items place with almost no restrictions: embed chests into walls, stack them directly on top of each other, or let decorative pieces float in midair. Workstations are stricter and still respect placement boundaries, but remain fairly free compared to other survival games.

    Use Removal Mode (Patch 0.1.3)
Before Patch 0.1.3, Left Click placed and Right Click removed in one mode. After the update, Right Click toggles a dedicated Removal Mode that highlights hovered pieces in red. Use it for large tear-downs and to avoid accidental deletions.

    Build around your Hearth
The Hearth is the heart of your base and your main fast-travel point. You can place multiple Hearths (in limited quantity) across the world and build around each one. Upgrading the main Hearth unlocks powerful recipes and gear, so treat it as the anchor of the build.

How Base Building Works in Witchspire

Witchspire’s building system is built entirely around astral projection. When you enter build mode, your witch’s spirit leaves the body and floats freely around your structure, letting you place pieces from any angle — no scaffolding, no fall damage, no ladders required. This is the core of any witchspire guide to construction, and once you understand it, most of the base-building quirks in the game stop feeling strange.

The single most important thing to know up front: there is no separate “Creative Mode” vs “Survival Mode” toggle. One building system exists for every world. What changes between playthroughs is the world’s difficulty sliders, not a building mode — so the skill you learn here transfers to every save. (Note: the details below are community-reported, not officially confirmed by the developers.)

Witchspire build mode overview

Start With Astral Projection

Open building and your viewpoint detaches from the ground. You drift freely around your sanctuary and place structural pieces from any angle — above, below, or behind — without needing platforms or scaffolds to stand on. Because you are a projected spirit rather than a body standing on a beam, there is no fall damage while building. That makes multi-level roofs, towers, and awkward overhangs far less fiddly than in typical survival games: you simply float to the spot you need and place.

Place Pieces Freely (With a Few Exceptions)

Piece placement is generous. Most common items place with almost no restrictions:

  • You can embed chests into walls regardless of the surrounding geometry.
  • You can stack items directly on top of each other.
  • Decorative pieces can float in midair if that is the look you want.

The exception is workstations, which are stricter than pure decor — they still respect placement boundaries. Even so, they remain fairly free compared to other survival titles, so you rarely need to fight the grid.

Learn the Patch 0.1.3 Removal Mode

Before Patch 0.1.3, placing and removing shared one mode: Left Click placed, Right Click removed. The update reworked this split. Now Right Click toggles you into a dedicated Removal Mode, which highlights pieces in red when you hover over them. This makes large tear-downs much cleaner and helps prevent accidentally deleting a wall you just placed while you were still building. Learn the toggle before you start dismantling a big base — it is the one mechanic most new builders trip over.

Build Around Your Hearth

The Hearth is the heart of your base and your main fast-travel point. You can find and place multiple Hearths (in limited quantity) across the world and build around each one. Upgrading the main Hearth is what unlocks powerful recipes and gear, so treat it as the anchor of a build rather than an afterthought. A well-placed Hearth doubles as a teleport hub for the whole structure — which is why choosing the best base location really means choosing the best Hearth location.

Tune Difficulty and Spirit Settings (These Are Not Build Modes)

Witchspire lets you tune world difficulty when creating a new world — and even on the fly in an existing one. These are difficulty sliders, not separate building modes: lower it for a cozy run, raise it for a challenge. One setting boosts XP for you and your Familiar. A spirit-delay chance setting means higher values make new Familiars linger more often, which helps you (community-reported) recruit and bond with them at your own pace. None of these change how building works — you can always build the same way regardless of the slider positions.

Quick Planning Tips

  • Pick your Hearth first, then build outward. Since the Hearth is your fast-travel node, plan the base around its position so your teleport lands you somewhere useful.
  • Test Removal Mode on a small wall before committing to a renovation so the red-highlight toggle feels natural.
  • Exploit the free-floating camera for roofs and towers — this is where astral projection saves the most time.
  • Keep workstations on flat, boundary-friendly ground and save the “floating” tricks for decor and chests.
