  2. 2
Craft the Hearth Core (Level 1 to 2)
The Hearth Core is the single most important early recipe and upgrades the Hearth to Level 2. It uses Spirit Essence, with a Crystal listed for the Hearth Core upgrade, plus Planks for the L1 to L2 building upgrade. Apply upgrades at the Alchemy Table.
  3. 3
    Set up crafting stations
Workbench and Alchemy Table are available from the start (the latter handles Hearth upgrades). Unlock the Forge via Meadows exploration, the Spell Weaving Loom in Mid Meadows, and the Alchemy Circle from the central skill tree. Run a Furnace to smelt ingots from ore.

  4. 4
    Stockpile dust tiers
Hearth upgrades and incense consume Spirit Dust (base tier), Greater Spirit Dust, and Brilliant Spirit Dust. Shimmer Dust crafts Shimmering Incense. Higher tiers block upgrades that base dust does not cover.
  5. 5
    Reach Hearth Level 7
The Hearth Level 7 upgrade requires a Ritual Candle, crafted at the Alchemy Circle (unlocked from the central skill tree). Reaching L7 unlocks the Windmill structure.
  6. 6
Unlock Hearth Level 8 and automation
The Windmill leads to the Level 8 Hearth upgrade. Hearth 8 unlocks the Forester's Hut, which passively produces Beeswax or Wood when a Treetop familiar is assigned. The Mining Station passively produces Gemstones when a Familiar is assigned.

  7. 7
    Spend Luminary Points
Invest Luminary Points in the Luminary Skill Tree. Reported nodes include Vigor (double jump), Luck (+1 luck per point), and Scroll of Regrowth (spawns Spirit Trees when used). The Lux Wand (Brightspreader) end-tree wand unlocks once you reach Hearth 8.

How to Build a Hearth in Witchspire

The Hearth is the centre of everything you do in Witchspire. Drop one down and you get a base that stops enemies from spawning around you, unlocks fast travel, and acts as a respawn anchor — which is exactly why “how to build a Hearth” is one of the first things every new witch looks up. From there it upgrades through 9 levels, and those levels gate your crafting stations, your skill tree, and your best gear.

This progression walkthrough covers how the Hearth levels work, which recipes and materials actually block each step, and how the Luminary skill tree ties into the whole thing.

Data note: Witchspire is in Steam Early Access (since June 10, 2026), and the Hearth/Luminary system below is compiled from community-reported guides on witchspire.online, witchspiredb.com, witchspire.org, and similar hubs — much of it current around patch 0.1.4. Treat numbers and recipes as community-reported, not officially confirmed, and expect them to shift between patches.

What the Hearth Does and Why You Build It Early

Witchspire Hearth base area

The Hearth is described by the community as the heart of your base, and its functionality is layered:

  • Blocks enemy spawns in the area around it, so your camp stays safe to build and craft in.
  • Enables fast travel, turning it into your main navigation hub while exploring biomes.
  • Respawns you when you die, making it a checkpoint as much as a home.
  • Upgrades through 9 levels, each unlocking new stations and structures.

Because of the spawn suppression and travel, most beginner guides recommend planting a Hearth as soon as you can. It is the anchor that makes the rest of the survival loop (gathering, crafting, boss runs) bearable.

The Hearth Core Is Your First Priority

The single most important early recipe in Witchspire is the Hearth Core, which upgrades your Hearth to Level 2. It is crafted using Spirit Essence, and a Crystal is also listed as a requirement for the Hearth Core upgrade.

The Level 1 to Level 2 Hearth upgrade additionally uses Planks as a building material. So your immediate early-game checklist is roughly:

  1. Gather Spirit Wood, Spirit Ore, and Wood around the starting biome.
  2. Collect a Crystal and Spirit Essence for the Hearth Core.
  3. Craft Planks for the L1 → L2 upgrade.
  4. Use the Alchemy Table (available from the start) to apply Hearth upgrades.

Getting the Core done early pays off because it gates the larger upgrade chain that follows.

Get Your Crafting Stations Online

Crafting stations in a Witchspire camp

You do not upgrade the Hearth in isolation — several stations feed the recipes you need. Community guides list them like this:

  • Workbench — available from the start; makes tools, the familiar whistle, bait, and the lantern.
  • Alchemy Table — available from the start; handles potions, elixirs, Hearth upgrades, and incense.
  • Forge — unlocked through Meadows exploration; metal tools and the tier 2 pickaxe.
  • Spell Weaving Loom — unlocked in Mid Meadows; scrolls, robes, and tome weapons.
  • Alchemy Circle — unlocked from the central skill tree; crafts Ritual Candles.
  • Furnace — smelts ore into ingots using Charcoal.

A practical tip: unlock the Forge and get a Furnace running early, since ingots compound into most mid-game Hearth and equipment recipes.

Stockpile the Right Dust Tiers

Hearth upgrades and incense both consume dust, and the tiers are not interchangeable. The materials to keep on your radar:

  • Spirit Dust — the base-tier dust used for Hearth upgrades and incense.
  • Greater Spirit Dust — a higher tier.
  • Brilliant Spirit Dust — the top reported tier.
  • Shimmer Dust — used to craft Shimmering Incense.

If you are stuck on an upgrade you think should be available, check whether you are short on a higher dust tier rather than the base one.

Pushing Into the Late Hearth Levels (7–9)

Late-game Witchspire structures

The upper Hearth levels are where structures start automating your resources:

  • Hearth Level 7 — needs a Ritual Candle, crafted at the Alchemy Circle. Reaching L7 unlocks the Windmill.
  • Windmill → Hearth Level 8 — the Windmill leads into the Level 8 Hearth upgrade.
  • Hearth Level 8 — unlocks the Forester’s Hut, which passively produces Beeswax or Wood when you assign a Treetop familiar to it.
  • Mining Station — assign a Familiar and it passively produces Gemstones, which sell at full price at Mirella’s Shop (one of the game’s best Gold-per-hour loops).

The throughline: from Hearth 7 onward, your base starts generating materials for you. Getting a Treetop bonded (the “You’re a big one!” achievement) is worthwhile specifically because it powers the Forester’s Hut.

How the Luminary Skill Tree Fits In

The Luminary Skill Tree is powered by Luminary Points, and it is tightly coupled to Hearth progress — the tree is where your character power grows alongside your base. Community-reported nodes and unlocks include:

  • Vigor — enables a double jump, a major mobility upgrade for exploration.
  • Luck — increases the luck stat by 1 per point spent.
  • Scroll of Regrowth — a scroll and a node; using the scroll spawns Spirit Trees.
  • Lux Wand (Brightspreader) — an end-tree wand unlocked in the Luminaries tree once you reach Hearth 8.

Because the Alchemy Circle is gated behind the central skill tree, and the Lux Wand is gated behind Hearth 8, it pays to plan Hearth upgrades and Luminary Points together rather than treating them as separate systems.

Quick Progression Tips

  • Plant your Hearth immediately after the Thornveil intro; the fast travel alone transforms exploration.
  • Bank Spirit Essence and a Crystal for the Hearth Core before you need them.
  • Do not skip the dust tiers — Greater and Brilliant Spirit Dust block upgrades that base dust will not cover.
  • Push to Hearth 8 to unlock both the Forester’s Hut and the Lux Wand, plus Gemstone farming via the Mining Station.
  • Recheck recipes after each patch — this guide reflects community data around patch 0.1.4, and Early Access reworks are ongoing.
