Witchspire Beginner’s Guide: Your First Familiar, Base, and Survival Steps
The following walkthrough covers the Witchspire opening — from the very first dark room to picking a base location. Everything below is community-reported from a player-written guide and is not officially confirmed by the developers, so treat key bindings and item values as a starting reference and verify them in your own playthrough. Screenshots are player-submitted.
Get Through the Awakening Prologue
You begin in a dark place with a voice calling out to you. Your backpack contains only a wand and a single health-restoration potion. Drink that potion, then follow the voice.
What follows is a guided path that teaches the core actions one at a time — kill, pick up, run, jump, and so on. It is intentionally simple, but a few platforming sections can still catch you off guard. One community player reported that the jumps over the jellyfish-like enemies only succeeded on the third attempt, so don’t be discouraged if you fall a couple of times.
Pick Your First Familiar
At the end of the prologue you reach the familiar-selection area. The game offers four winged or hybrid beasts:
- A winged cat
- A half-owl, half-lion creature
- A dragon
- A fish-like creature with ears
Walk up to each beast and read its history and its abilities before deciding — you can only choose one here. According to community reports, this is not a permanent loss: as you progress through the world you will encounter each of the other creatures and can still tame them later.
Once you have your companion, continue forward and you arrive in the main world.
Read the Notes and Loot the First Chest
In the open world, you follow the trail left by your friends, who have scattered hints inside books. Press F to read a book; press F again or simply walk away to exit reading mode. After reading the first note, collect the items left at the arch and take in the view of the island.
Then look for the first ledge on your right. Follow it all the way to the end and you will find a chest directly under a large tree. On the way there, scoop up everything in your path: blue berries, sticks, green flowers, and stones.
Two of these early pickups are effectively your healing supplies, which matters a lot this early:
- Green flowers — processed into sheets at the workbench, and give +30 HP.
- Blue berries — consumed directly for +10 HP; no workbench processing needed.
Craft a Workbench and Learn to Reclaim It
The quest then asks you to build a workbench. Press B to open the building mode and place it. When you are finished, you can pick the workbench back up by opening build mode again (same B key) and clicking it with the right mouse button.
The community tip here is worth following: until you’ve settled on a permanent base location, reclaim every structure you build and carry it with you. You are not locked in during these early chapters, so nothing is wasted.
Expect Your Backpack to Fill Up Fast
As you chase the story markers, be ready for inventory space to run out quickly. The guide notes this is unusually early compared to most survival games — a first-time player described Witchspire as the first game that required base building this soon. To soften the squeeze:
- Fight mobs along the way to level up as you travel.
- Pick up everything collectible you pass.
- Start scouting for a base spot as soon as you’re comfortable.
Claim the Hearth and Choose a Base Location
Eventually you’ll reach the first hearth-related objective. By the quest you find a broken hearth, pick it up, and unlock the skill tree, spending torches (light sources) to progress it. Once the hearth is in your backpack, you’re officially past the “homeless” phase and free to build a cozy base.
According to the guide author, building on the very first map worked out well — they found no drawbacks and the base was needed very soon anyway. To start your base you’ll need:
- Wood — gather it as you explore.
- The sickle, described as the “first tool of the untrained witch.”
Quick Tips Recap
- Keep blue berries and green-flower sheets on hand for emergency healing.
- Read every book you find — the notes double as wayfinding hints.
- Reclaim early structures with build mode until your base location is final.
- Level up by fighting mobs while traveling, rather than grinding in one spot.
- The first map is a viable long-term base home according to community experience.
