Start With the Right Priorities, Not the Right Spawn
The first hour of Witchspire sets the tempo for everything that follows. You have four jobs, in this order: lock in a starter Familiar, stockpile raw resources, throw down a Hearth, and knock out the opening quests. Get these done and you’ll enter the mid-game with a working base instead of a backpack full of loose materials.
Everything below is drawn from community reports gathered during Early Access. Familiar names, stats, and Hearth tiers are not officially confirmed and may shift in future patches — treat these numbers as a map, not a rulebook.
Step 1 (Minutes 0–5): Pick Your Starter Familiar
Your first real decision is the starter Familiar. You’re offered four, each locked to a different element with a distinct playstyle. This pick shapes the whole early game, so don’t rush it.
| Familiar | Element | Playstyle | Early-Game Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Locto | Lux | Balanced starter; good for new players | ★★★★☆ |
| Bril | Crystal | Solid combat familiar | ★★★★☆ |
| Quol | Ethereal | Safest beginner pick — no hard counters | ★★★★★ Recommended |
| Fien | Nox | Dark-element access early | ★★★☆☆ |
Community recommendation: Quol (Ethereal) is the safest beginner pick thanks to balanced stats and no hard counters. If you’re planning to play with friends, Locto (Lux) is reported as the stronger co-op choice. Bril (Crystal) is favored for boss fights, while Fien (Nox) suits aggressive players who want early dark-element access.

Tip: If you’re unsure, default to Quol. The lack of hard counters means you won’t get walled by a random encounter in your first hour, and you can always build a more specialized team later.
Step 2 (Minutes 5–15): Explore and Gather Resources
With a Familiar in tow, resist the urge to sprint toward objectives. The opening area is dense with materials you’ll burn through almost immediately, so spend a solid ten minutes hoovering it up.
| Resource | Priority | Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | ★★★★★ | Hearth, tools, structures |
| Stone | ★★★★★ | Hearth, tools, upgrades |
| Plants | ★★★☆☆ | Cooking, potions, crafting |
| Shimmerdust | ★★★★☆ | Magical crafting, bonding items |
Wood and Stone are the non-negotiables — you cannot build a Hearth without them, so grab both aggressively. Shimmerdust is easy to overlook but feeds the magical crafting and bonding items you’ll want shortly after. Plants are lower priority for now, but pocket every one you pass; they become cooking and potion fuel in the next step.

Tip: Mark resource-dense spots as you wander. You’ll be making several trips back for Wood and Stone, and a short mental map saves a lot of running once your base goes up.
Step 3 (Minutes 15–25): Build Your Hearth
The Hearth is the single most important structure in your early game. Treat it as the center of gravity for your whole base — everything else keys off it.
Why the Hearth Comes First
- Respawn point: If you die, you respawn at your Hearth rather than the world spawn, which saves a long walk back to your gear.
- Crafting hub: It unlocks crafting stations and recipes.
- Base foundation: Other structures require a Hearth placed nearby before they can go down.
How to Build It
- Gather materials: You need Wood and Stone. Check the crafting menu for the exact amounts before you commit.
- Open the crafting menu and navigate to the Structures tab.
- Select the Hearth recipe.
- Choose a location: Pick a flat, central spot near resources — and not too close to enemy spawns.
- Place and confirm.
The community reports that Hearth levels gate your progression roughly as follows, though the game’s base-building tutorial is reportedly incomplete and these tiers may not be fully accurate:
| Level | Requirements | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Basic Wood & Stone | Respawn, basic crafting |
| Level 2 | More resources, some rare materials | Advanced crafting stations |
| Level 3+ | Rare & crafted materials | Full base functionality |
Tip: Don’t build against a cliff or in a choke point. Flat, open ground gives you room to expand your base as new structures unlock.
Step 4 (Minutes 25–40): Complete Your First Quest
With your Hearth standing, the opening quests kick in. These aren’t filler — they’re tutorials for Witchspire’s three core systems: crafting, cooking, and potion brewing. Clear them and you’ll understand the loop that carries you through the rest of the game.
- Craft tools first. Build an axe and a pickaxe as soon as the recipe is available. These speed up every future resource run, making them your top priority right after the Hearth.
- Cook food. Gather the plants you’ve been hoarding and start cooking. Food sustains you during longer expeditions and feeds directly into the potion-brewing chain that follows.
- Brew potions. The early quests walk you into potion brewing last. This is where your Shimmerdust and plant stockpiles start paying off in magical crafting and bonding items.

Tip: Keep a small surplus of Wood, Stone, and Plants after each quest turn-in. The next tier of recipes will demand them, and you’ll be glad you didn’t dump everything into a single project.

- ✔ Place your Hearth on flat, central, enemy-free ground.
- ✔ Craft an axe and pickaxe before anything else.
- ✔ Push through the crafting, cooking, and brewing quests to unlock the core loop.
